Spring Is Ready To Be Sprung!

If you live in the Northeastern United States like we do, it is feeling a lot more like spring right now than winter. Even though we are still a good couple of weeks away from the official start of spring, there have been years when March was nearly as cold and equally as snowy as our two worst winter months, January and February. I actually saw a tulip poking its head up in our garden this morning. Which brings me to my usual lament about time, where does it go?

Although we are a bit late with our newsletter, we aren't losing sight of our purpose and vision, to keep moving forward with saving wildlife through our efforts at Eye Help Animals. We had a much needed meeting this morning where we discussed some of our goals for 2010. We both agree we want to have monthly specials as well as other announced specials. A few of the ideas we had are:

  • February 14, 2010 began the Year of the Tiger: our special to celebrate the Tiger all year will include a Tiger Wildlife Eye Collectible Pin for every 4 pins you buy
  • Every month this year there will be special offers celebrating one of our animals.
  • We are also planning other monthly specials around the holidays we all celebrate throughout the year.
I am also working on another product that should be ready to feature in the next issue of our newsletter. I'm very excited about this product — it is another item that women are going to love! Stay tuned!!

And, as always, what means more than anything to us, and what makes it all worthwhile, is that we are...

"Saving Wildlife Together"!

Who's Watching Me

I mentioned in a past newsletter how when I walk by any of the windows in my kitchen, which look out into my back yard, I always check for movement, or something that looks out of place because there is an animal out there. I'm not talking about the usual gray and red squirrels, the chickadees, the tufted titmouse, or the blue jay. I'm talking about something a little bigger, like a fox or a deer.

Well, this past week I quickly glanced out the window as I was busy making my breakfast and knew something was out of place. It didn't register immediately though because it wasn't something on the ground. I saw something in a tree that didn't belong there. When I looked back, I saw a very big bird, but I couldn't quite make out what it was, although my first thought was 'owl'. I got my binoculars and ran upstairs to try to get a better view, alerting Jim, along the way, of our visitor. The binoculars proved me right, it was an owl, a barred owl.

I got my digital camera and started taking pictures. Jim set up the tripod and zooming in got a few really close up pictures. I was hoping to get him with his eyes open but he was interested in napping with the winter sun shining on him. I was surprised that the birds and squirrels ran around the yard, as though he wasn't there, although he did turn to look at them when they flew close to him, almost intentionally trying to hit him. I had the feeling they didn't want him in their neighborhood and were hoping he'd take the hint and leave. I was surprised when I saw a little red squirrel run up behind the branch he was sitting on and then scurry off as fast as he could. This was a good indication that our owl wasn't hunting, he just wanted to nap in the sun. Even though he annoyed the regular critters in my backyard, he made my day.

WILDLIFE ENTERTAINMENT

Entertainment at what price?

If you watch the news, we're sure you've either seen or heard about the death of one of Seaworld Orlando's animal trainers in an incident involving Tillikum, an adult male orca, on February 24th, 2010. To be sure, it's a terrible tragedy. But, the tragedy goes beyond the loss of the young woman. Wildlife conservation and entertainment are vastly different concepts and there are very few examples we can think of where the two align.
