Happy Anniversary

Welcome to this Special Summer Double Issue of our Eyes Alive Newsletter.

DJ and I are asking you to celebrate with us as Eye Help Animals, LLC celebrates one year as a dream come true for us.  It took us just over 20 years to begin planning how we could work together, combining our own unique skills, experiences, and professional backgrounds with our shared passions.
And, it took another 18 months of work, effort, and planning, before we finally launched our business officially on 08/08/08.  We can hardly believe that we've been talking to people for a year about our Mission and Vision.
In this first year we've met some wonderful people and have shared some amazing wildlife stories.

As we begin our second year, we want to give a special thank you to everyone who's supported us and who shares our passion for wildlife and wild places.
You are the reason we are truly Saving Wildlife Together!

And, once again, we humbly ask and encourage you to pass along our "Eyes Alive" Newsletter to anyone you may know who cares about wildlife conservation and habitat preservation.

Help us fulfill Our Mission and Vision

Eye Help Animals Supports Zoo Atlanta's Give So They Stay Campaign

OUR NEWEST PARTNER

"Ideas without action are just ideas." - Jim Fontaine

While driving to my weekly Rotary Club meeting on June 18th, I happened to be listening to MPBN (Maine Public Broadcasting Network) when I heard a short news story about Zoo Atlanta's "Give So They Stay" campaign.  You may be quite surprised, as I was, to learn that Zoo Atlanta is one of only four zoos in the United States where you can see the beautiful -- and rare (as in endangered) -- giant panda.  Equally amazing is the relationship between Zoo Atlanta and China, home to the panda's native habitat.  Keeping pandas is quite expensive -- more than you might imagine.  However, the knowledge and information that Zoo Atlanta gathers from its captive breeding program provides valuable data that can help China to preserve and protect this endangered species and, hopefully, save it from extinction.

Giant Panda Eye Wildlife Collectible Pin
I just knew that DJ and I could find a way to help Zoo Atlanta, and so began several days of brainstorming.  Since we had already established a partnership with a local organization (see the story about our partnership with the Loon Preservation Committee that was in our May Eyes Alive Newsletter), we already had some good ideas of how we could help Zoo Atlanta in their campaign.  And, after several e-mail exchanges with Marcus Margerum, V.P. of Marketing and Sales for Zoo Atlanta, we were able to enter into a simple Partnership Agreement based upon our common goals of saving and protecting wildlife and habitat around the world.  DJ and I encourage you to visit Zoo Atlanta's "Give So They Stay" Campaign website and to purchase one of our special co-branded Giant Panda Eye Wildlife Collectible Pins.

Eye Help Animals, as part of our partnership with Zoo Atlanta, is committing the full 25% of our profits on the sale of these pins to Zoo Atlanta for the duration of their campaign.

"Saving Wildlife Together", as you know, is our life-long goal, and we are extremely pleased and honored to be able to help such a venerable and recognized institution as Zoo Atlanta.

Sometimes the answer is staring you right in the face.

DJ and I absolutely love it when the solution to a problem presents itself without any effort at all.  Of course we know that this is the Law of Attraction at work, and we have countless examples of how it absolutely does work.  Let us share this example with you:  We know that there are many people around the world who believe, as we do, in the intrinsic value of wildlife and wild places.
Just search on the term 'saving wildlife' on Google and you'll get a sense of just how many organizations and people are focused on the topic.  Well, part of the strength of our organization is our ability to make a positive impact while giving our supporters a strong sense of participation in the work they are helping us to accomplish.  Which is exactly why when DJ began thinking about how Eye Help Animals can improve on that experience -- the answer came to her immediately:   Since our tagline is "Saving Wildlife Together" -- what better way than by inviting our supporters to become a member of our very own SWaT Team!  That's our Saving Wildlife Together Team!

So, how do you become a member and what benefits do you receive?

WILDLIFE ALL AROUND US

Seeing is Believing

I've made it a daily routine that, when passing any of the windows in our house, I look out them, checking for wildlife on our land.  Sometimes I will go for several days and have the pleasure of enjoying squirrels, chipmunks, and many varieties of backyard birds, but nothing larger.  This past winter we were thrilled to find a red fox in our back yard who was close enough for me to zoom in on and take about 30 pictures, many of which I've used in a few paintings.
Apparently she was so comfortable here that she decided to have her litter down a slight incline and out of sight of the back of our house.  And we couldn't believe our luck when the young ones finally emerged from the den -- the pictures we took were not as good since the kits usually didn't show themselves until dusk, the time when my camera decides it needs a flash!
Another time one of our dogs was carrying on, moaning and whining, and we figured the chipmunk was running around on our deck.  But when Jim finally looked out the window, a doe was out there, just off our back deck and about 5 feet from our door.

And the latest surprise for me was when one of our dogs (the same moaning, whiny one) was in our bay window, standing on her hind legs, so I had to see what she was so worked up about and there, in our front yard, was a young moose.  That was the first one in the nine years that we've lived here that we've ever seen on our property.  I was breathless as I watched it run down the front yard, into the woods, and out of sight.

Sometimes I think about how much time I spend looking out our windows and I usually see the same few squirrels, chipmunks, and birds and then I think about what I might have missed if I didn't stop to look every time.

Learning to Give

When I think of all of the things that I learned in school, college, and working in corporate America, it strikes me that the one thing that was never really explained to my satisfaction is how to make a difference while making a living.  I've always considered myself to be a service-minded individual and have contributed and continue to contribute to many worthwhile organizations.  But, I've also always thought that we often go about this the wrong way.  What I mean is that people often look at the money they earn as the goal of their efforts.  And, if they're fortunate enough to make a lot of money, then they may think, "What can I do with the 'extra' abundance that is mine?"  However, the approach that we've taken with Eye Help Animals is more in line with what I think is a better model:  The purpose of Eye Help Animals is to create the abundance to support our philanthropic goals while earning our living.  A subtle difference, to be sure, but I can honestly say that I have never questioned why I am doing the work of Eye Help Animals as I may have with previous jobs that I've had!

The Year of the Ox

It was one year ago that Eye Help Animal's website went live on 08/08/08. I'll never forget the day because it was the opening day of the summer Olympics in Beijing and the Chinese put on an amazing show during the opening ceremonies.  I was torn between watching the show and helping Jim finish up our website so that I could hit the key that sent our Eye Help Animals website out into the world.

Ah yes, doesn't everyone remember the birth of their baby?  Our baby has grown so much this past year, and it has become so much more intelligent than it was just one year ago!  A second collection of wildlife collectible pins is available and also a few more new products.  We are so proud of our baby and just love watching it grow, day by day.

Our baby was born in the year of the Rat, and this year, 2009, is the year of the Ox.  Upon researching the Rat in the Chinese Zodiac, I found the news is all good!  It is a great time for the Rat to transform their dreams into reality since the Rat will get the support, meet the right people, and find the appropriate resources that can bring the Rat to their goal.  We are excited about the partners we have made this year and plan on bringing even more partners into the Eye Help Animals family as we watch it grow beyond our wildest dreams!
Coming up next... the Year of the Tiger!  Stay tuned!
